Overcoming Sleep Deprivation: Secrets from a Sleep Expert

We sat down with Charlott, owner of Charlott Lehmann Sleep Consulting, an experienced Baby & Child Sleep Coach and Infant Nanny. We asked her to share some of her tried-and-tested sleep secrets with you, guiding you towards those blissful nights and precious nap times you might be longing for.

Did you know that we all briefly wake up during the night? Babies, children and adults, we are all alike! Based on this knowledge, you won’t be able to stop your baby waking in the night, but you can show them how to deal with these night wakings with little interruption as possible.

1. Find Your Approach
Every parent and child is unique, so it's essential to find a sleep approach that aligns with your parenting style, your child's age and temperament. Whether it's gentle methods or more structured approaches, the right strategy will lay the groundwork for success. Don't hesitate to seek guidance from a professional Sleep Coach if you're struggling to develop a plan tailored to your family's needs.

2. Reserve Time
Transforming sleep habits requires dedication and consistency. Set aside 2-3 weeks where you can fully focus your energy on implementing sleep improvements. This dedicated time will be crucial for establishing new routines and overcoming any initial challenges.

3. Keep a Diary
Track your child's sleep patterns diligently. Whether you use a dedicated app or simply jot down notes, keeping a sleep diary will help you identify trends and monitor progress. Start by writing down at what time you start the bedtime routine, how long it takes for your child to fall asleep, and the level of assistance provided. This information will serve as valuable insight as you adjust your approach.

4. Manage Expectations
Celebrate every small victory along the way. Progress may be gradual, but each step forward is a triumph. Whether it's a slightly earlier bedtime or a smoother transition to sleep, acknowledge and celebrate these achievements to stay motivated. Nothing is worse than giving up after 3 days, because you feel stuck, overwhelmed or frustrated.

5. Stay Calm, Consistent, and Committed
Sustainable sleep habits aren’t formed in a day. Stay patient, calm, and consistent in implementing your sleep plan. Remember, change takes time, and your child will need time to adapt to the new routine. Stay committed to the process, knowing that persistence pays off in the end.

By incorporating these simple yet effective sleep strategies for 2-3 weeks, you can pave the way for restful nights and peaceful mornings.

Now, imagine your baby would fall asleep independently after a calming bedtime routine with lots of cuddles from you. You step out your baby’s bedroom door with no fear, guilt or exhaustion and you would still have 3 blissful hours for yourself and your partner. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

Every child can learn how to sleep comfortably and happily by her/himself - if you ever feel overwhelmed or in need of guidance, remember that help is available.
